Off of the central coast of New Jersey, in Ocean County, the 18-mile long Long Beach Island, runs north-south and ranges from a few blocks to a mile wide. It is part of the Intercoastal Waterway and is one of several barrier islands along the New Jersey coast. There are over 20 communities, including Beach Haven, on the island. Some have yacht clubs and marinas. Industries that provide employment in the area include educational, health and social services, arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services, retail trade, real estate, construction and public administration. At the southern end of Long Beach Island, below Beach Haven Inlet, is the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Although the refuge is closed during the summer months, the fall and spring are excellent times to observe the birds, animals, and plants in the beach and marsh areas. In between are beaches and parks offering places to swim, fish, play and picnic. The island’s main street is Long Beach Blvd., except in Beach Haven where the same street is called Bay Avenue. Excellent shops and restaurants are found on this main street in every community. Students in grades K-5 attend schools of the Long Beach Island School District, and those in grades 6-12 attend schools of the Southern Regional School District. Several colleges and universities are in proximity for those who wish to attain a degree in higher education. About 20,000 year round residents have discovered the charm of island living and thousands more come each summer to open their cottages and enjoy beach living at its finest.
